Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (NO2), commonly referred to as “laughing gas” is an odorless, colorless gas. Mixed with oxygen, it is administered through a mask over your nose. As you breathe it in, it will quickly ease your worries and help you feel relaxed. Often, it will induce a tingling sensation in the arms and legs, as well as a feeling of mild euphoria.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

The most notable benefit of nitrous oxide is that it can allow you to receive the treatment you need in complete relaxation. If your anxiety has caused you to put off dental treatment for a long period of time, nitrous oxide can help you to undergo treatment to repair past dental damage and lay the foundation for a future of oral health. The other significant benefit of nitrous oxide is that its effects subside quickly. Once Dr. Svetcov removes the mask, the gas leaves your system promptly, and you will typically be able to drive yourself home following treatment.

Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is virtually risk-free. You may become a bit nauseous under the influence of laughing gas, but eating a meal about four hours before your treatment can often prevent this side effect. Dr. Svetcov is very experienced in administering nitrous oxide, and he will make sure that you receive the appropriate dose

You should not utilize Nitrous Oxide if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
